Allergy Testing Q & A

What are allergies and asthma?

Allergies often mean seasonal allergies characterized by sneezing, runny nose, and a cough. You may be reactive to pollen, mold, pet dander, dust, and other pollutants. When your immune system comes in contact with the allergens, it experiences a heightened response – hence your misery.

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that interferes with your ability to breathe. Asthma symptoms can develop due to allergens, stress, or infections. Allergic asthma may only appear when exposed to a specific pollen or other substances occurs.

Both allergies and asthma have similar symptoms. Allergies affect your sinuses and airway but may also manifest as hives, gastrointestinal issues, or eye irritation. Allergies can’t be cured, but are manageable with the right treatment.

Who should undergo allergy testing?

If you suspect you have an allergy to pollen, food, or pets, Dr. Burrows at Coast and Aloe Medicine and Aesthetics may recommend testing. Be suspicious if you have symptoms such as:

  • Wheezing
  • Coughing
  • Runny nose
  • Fatigue
  • Sore throat

A fever does usually accompany allergies unless they’ve progressed to a sinus infection. A persistent rash or digestive issues can be other signs.

What is involved in allergy testing?

A simple skin test is commonly used to check for allergies. Dr. Burrows punctures your skin slightly and applies a liquid version of the suspected allergen onto the site. She then monitors the site for a reaction, such as itching, swelling, or redness. You can have many different allergy tests at one time.

Skin testing is most effective for allergies to airborne substances, such as pollen. If a food allergy is suspected, skin tests may be an option, but you may also need blood tests for confirmation.

The blood test, known as in vitro immunoglobulin E antibody test, may also be useful for people who can’t have a skin test because of a possibly severe reaction. You may also be a better candidate for a blood test if you have certain skin conditions, are on medications such as antihistamines, that interfere with your results.

If Dr. Burrows suspects you have asthma, you’ll undergo lung function tests. She’ll also help you identify exactly what your triggers are for your asthma attacks if applicable.

What is the treatment for allergies and asthma?

Dr. Burrows provides a comprehensive treatment plan to help you deal with your allergies and/or asthma. Oral and inhaled medications are one form of management. One of the most effective ways to control allergic reactions and asthma attacks is to avoid triggers. Once you’ve identified these, Dr. Burrows can offer suggestions as to how to minimize your exposure.
